Guernsey Rabbits Face Deadly Disease Outbreak
23 May
Summary
- A dangerous virus, RHVD2, is affecting rabbits on Guernsey.
- Myxomatosis spreads through insect bites, posing risks to pet rabbits.
- Vaccinations and mosquito guards are recommended for rabbit protection.

Animal health professionals on Guernsey are alerting rabbit owners to the severe threat posed by Rabbit Haemorraghic Viral Disease (RHVD2) and Myxomatosis, especially for unvaccinated rabbits in outdoor enclosures. The GSPCA has reported a notable rise in cases of RHVD2. Myxomatosis, transmitted by blood-sucking insects like fleas and mosquitoes, also presents a significant danger.
RHVD2, a virus first identified in France in 2010, can affect rabbits of all ages and can be fatal, with some rabbits showing no prior symptoms. While its exact entry into Guernsey is uncertain, potential causes include imported rabbits or parasites carried by migratory birds. Myxomatosis, which has been present in Guernsey for years, causes swelling, discharge, and blindness.
Veterinary advice for vaccination against both diseases is strongly recommended for all pet rabbits. Additionally, owners can reduce risks by eliminating stagnant water sources in gardens and using mosquito-proof guards on hutches to prevent insect-borne infections. Immediate veterinary consultation is advised for any rabbit exhibiting signs of illness.
