Gastroenterologist Dr. Saurabh Sethi, with training from Harvard and Stanford, has shared insights into the nutritional profile of quinoa. He confirmed that quinoa is a naturally gluten-free option, suitable even for individuals with celiac disease, according to a 2014 study. The expert highlighted quinoa as a significant source of protein, containing all nine essential amino acids crucial for bodily development and growth.
Further, Dr. Sethi noted that quinoa offers antioxidants beneficial for heart and metabolic health, potentially improving insulin sensitivity and cholesterol levels. Its high fiber content also contributes positively to gut health. However, he cautioned that while promising, early research on quinoa's effects on mood and anxiety is not yet conclusive, and it cannot independently reverse fatty liver disease.
He strongly advised against consuming quinoa raw, explaining that it contains saponins which can lead to bitterness and stomach upset. Properly cooked quinoa is recommended, with a suggested serving size of half to one cup a few times per week. Dr. Sethi clarified that quinoa is a pseudo-cereal, not a grain, but this distinction doesn't impact its gut benefits.
