Queensland Bird Flu Scare: Petrel Tested

A possible bird flu incident is being investigated in Queensland, marking a potential 14th discovery of the virus in Australia. A northern giant petrel found deceased on a Noosa beach on Saturday has been tested for avian influenza.

Rescue organizers anticipate test results within one to two weeks. They are implementing protective measures while handling the bird. This potential case follows 13 confirmed discoveries of bird flu in other Australian states, including seven in Western Australia, five in South Australia, and one in New South Wales.

Biosecurity Queensland confirmed their awareness and stated the bird would undergo testing as part of an ongoing surveillance program. The department does not report negative results but will provide updates if a positive case is detected. There is currently no evidence of infection in poultry or the broader agricultural industry, and the risk to human health is considered low.

Authorities are reminding the public to avoid contact with sick or deceased wild birds and to report any concerns to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline. Recommendations include cleaning footwear and clothing after visiting natural areas or farms, practicing good hand hygiene, and keeping pets away from wildlife.
