9 Sep
Summary
- Breastfeeding consultant accused of illegally practicing medicine.
- Infant died after a tongue-tie clipping procedure.
- Dentist and consultant face multiple professional misconduct charges.

Marie-Ève Sturrock, a lactation consultant, has been accused by Quebec's Order of Dentists (ODQ) of illegally practicing a profession reserved for its members. The accusations stem from the death of four-week-old Jules Beauchemin on June 28, 2023. His parents reported that Sturrock, working with dentist Marie-Ève Grégoire, recommended a frenotomy to address the infant's slight tongue-tie.
According to the child's father, Nicolas Beauchemin, Sturrock presented the procedure as the best decision. However, shortly after the surgery, the infant's condition worsened, leading to his death. The ODQ alleges Sturrock unlawfully diagnosed impairments and determined a treatment plan, violating professional codes.
As a result, four charges have been filed against Sturrock, with potential fines totaling $41,250. Additionally, dentist Marie-Ève Grégoire faces six disciplinary charges, including failing to fully inform the parents of risks and allowing Sturrock to prescribe the procedure. Grégoire has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
