8 Jul
Summary
- Hospital surgery rated "requires improvement" by health watchdog.
- Warning notices issued for safety and premises regulation breaches.
- Concerns include oxygen cylinder storage and obstructed fire exits.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has rated surgery at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in King's Lynn as "requires improvement." An inspection conducted in March 2026 revealed significant concerns regarding patient safety and the hospital's premises and equipment.
Following the inspection, the CQC issued warning notices due to breaches of regulations. Specific issues identified included the storage of oxygen cylinders, fire escapes being obstructed, and general hygiene problems. A review in December 2025 had previously uncovered a toxic culture that endangered patient safety.
Despite these serious findings, patients reported that most staff were kind and respectful. However, the CQC noted that leaders had not always effectively identified or addressed safety risks. Some staff also expressed a feeling that hospital leadership was not responsive to their concerns, indicating gaps in communication.
