Puppy to Detect Deadly Lung Infection
6 Jan
Summary
- Chilli, a puppy born at Battersea, will detect a dangerous lung infection.
- The dog will use its superior sense of smell to identify Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
- This training could lead to faster, non-invasive diagnoses for patients.

A puppy named Chilli, born at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, has passed all assessments required to become a specialist medical detection dog. He is set to begin advanced training with Medical Detection Dogs in the new year, where he will learn to identify the odour of the lung infection Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa).
Chilli's journey began when Battersea collaborated with Medical Detection Dogs. His confident nature and early aptitude for sniffing led to his selection for the Bio Detection Dog program. Over the past year, he has lived with volunteer socializers, developing confidence and adaptability.
Scientific studies have shown Bio Detection Dogs can detect Pa with high accuracy. Chilli's successful training, alongside his peers, promises to enhance diagnostic methods, offering faster, more precise, and less invasive testing for patients suffering from this infection.
