Punjab's Potbelly Problem: State Ranks Second Nationally
14 Feb
Summary
- Over half of Punjab's population suffers from abdominal obesity.
- Kerala leads India, while Punjab ranks second in belly fat prevalence.
- High obesity rates risk diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

A recent report reveals that 57.2% of Punjab's population experiences abdominal obesity, positioning the state second nationally for this health issue. This condition, characterized by excess belly fat, is strongly linked to an increased risk of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular ailments. Kerala recorded the highest prevalence at 58.2%, with Haryana following Punjab at 56.9%.
The data, presented by the ministry of health and family welfare in the Lok Sabha, highlights that Punjab's rate is substantially higher than the national average of 39.5%. The Indian Council of Medical Research's study, conducted between 2008 and 2020, informed these findings. The ministry is implementing lifestyle-focused interventions under the National Health Mission and promoting initiatives like the Eat Right Movement to encourage healthier eating habits.
Public health specialists urge Punjab to implement continuous community and policy-level interventions to mitigate the rising non-communicable disease burden. Medical experts stress that obesity is a disease, not just a cosmetic issue, often co-occurring with diabetes and sleep apnea. Sedentary lifestyles, poor diet, stress, and inadequate sleep are identified as primary causes of abdominal obesity. Adopting regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and stress management are crucial for reduction.
