24 Sep
Summary
- Punjab reports 384 H1N1 cases and five deaths in two months.
- Ludhiana is the most affected district with 777 suspected cases.
- Hospitals must establish flu corners for early detection and treatment.
Punjab is currently grappling with a surge in swine flu (H1N1) cases, with 384 infections and five fatalities recorded over the last two months. This marks a substantial increase compared to the same period last year. Ludhiana district is the hardest hit, reporting 777 suspected cases and 104 confirmed H1N1 infections.
The state health department has issued directives for all government and private hospitals to set up dedicated flu corners. This initiative is designed to facilitate early screening, identification, isolation, and treatment of individuals presenting with influenza-like illnesses, thereby preventing wider transmission.
Hospitals are also required to adhere to a specific categorization of influenza cases and report all instances of influenza-like illness and confirmed H1N1/H3N2 cases. Private laboratories and hospitals conducting H1N1/H3N2 testing need to obtain prior approval from the health department, a regulation that has reportedly led to underreporting of cases by some facilities.
District task forces, led by deputy commissioners, are responsible for implementing control measures. H1N1 is primarily transmitted through respiratory droplets, with symptoms including fever, cough, and body aches. While most cases are mild, severe complications can arise, especially in high-risk individuals.
