Punjab Prepares for Heatwave: Special Units Activated

The Punjab health department is implementing robust measures to combat the escalating temperatures and prepare for potential heat-related illnesses. As a critical step, all civil surgeons have been instructed to make dedicated Heat Stroke Management Units fully operational in district hospitals, sub-division hospitals, and community health centers across the state. These specialized wards will feature active cooling systems and be stocked with essential medical supplies like ORS and emergency drugs.

To further bolster preparedness, ambulance services are now strengthened to provide vital pre-hospital cooling for patients during transport. The state is leveraging the Integrated Health Information Platform for real-time tracking of Heat-Related Illness cases. Coordinated efforts are underway through district task force meetings, involving departments such as education, labour, and transport, to implement comprehensive heat action plans. The public, especially vulnerable groups, is advised to adhere to safety guidelines, stay hydrated, and avoid outdoor activities during peak sun hours.
