Punjab Boosts Maternal Care with Digital Referrals
9 Jan
Summary
- Punjab mandates digital coordination for maternal and child health referrals.
- Dedicated district and CHC groups to streamline emergency MCH communication.
- Punjab aims to lower maternal mortality ratio below 72 by 2025-26.

The Punjab health department is implementing a new digital coordination mechanism to strengthen emergency referral services for maternal and child healthcare. This initiative focuses on standardizing information sharing and response systems across all districts to expedite decision-making in critical situations.
Civil surgeons have been instructed to create dedicated digital groups at district and community health centre levels. These groups will facilitate seamless coordination among all healthcare facilities, including labor rooms, special newborn care units, and medical colleges, ensuring rapid communication for high-risk pregnancy referrals and emergencies.
This push for digital efficiency comes as Punjab's maternal mortality ratio stands at 90 per lakh live births. The state government has set an ambitious target to reduce this figure to below 72 by the end of 2025-26, aligning with national goals to improve maternal healthcare outcomes.
