Punjab Doctors Ordered: Prescribe Generic Drugs Only!

The Punjab health department has issued a directive to all government doctors, enforcing the prescription of generic medicines exclusively within public healthcare facilities. This mandate prohibits the use of brand names on all prescriptions, with strict warnings of administrative action for any deviation from these instructions.

Health officials emphasize that generic medicines contain the same active ingredients and meet the same safety standards as their branded counterparts, but are considerably cheaper. The initiative is anticipated to lower healthcare costs for patients, particularly benefiting economically vulnerable populations who depend on public health services.

The Punjab State Medical Services Association has welcomed the move, highlighting its primary goal of reducing financial burdens on patients. They also stressed the importance of ensuring a consistent supply of generic drugs through government channels and adequate budgeting for procurement.

To guarantee the continuous availability of medicines, the Punjab government has reinforced its procurement and monitoring systems. Hospitals are directed to manage stock levels proactively and place timely orders. Provisions have also been made for interim local procurement by hospital in-charges if state supplies face delays, ensuring patient care remains uninterrupted.
