Pune is set to observe World Thalassemia Day and World Red Cross Day through a comprehensive month-long campaign commencing May 8. The Indian Red Cross Society, Pune Branch, in partnership with the Thalassemia Society Pune Chapter and Janakalyan Blood Bank, has organized a series of impactful activities.
The observance will feature an awareness rally from Sahyadri Hospital to IMA Hall on May 8, followed by a CME on Thalassemia. Further events include free check-up camps, approximately 20 awareness sessions in colleges, and 30-35 blood donation camps across the city throughout May.
Experts highlight that Thalassemia, a genetic disorder, is largely preventable through screening and counseling. Dr. Nita Munshi stressed the importance of awareness, treatment support, and potential cures like bone marrow transplants, advocating for simple pre-marital or prenatal tests to prevent lifelong suffering.
Recognizing the critical need for blood, especially during summer months, Dr. Atul Kulkarni of Jan Kalyan Blood Bank noted that blood donation camps are a primary focus. These efforts aim to provide essential support to Thalassemia patients requiring regular transfusions and to address the overall blood scarcity. India faces a significant burden of Thalassemia globally, underscoring the urgent need for preventative measures.
