Pune Cops Swelter: 40°C Heat Tests Traffic Police Endurance
14 Mar
Summary
- Pune traffic police endure 12-hour shifts in extreme heat reaching 40°C.
- Female officers limit water intake to avoid restroom breaks, risking dehydration.
- Doctors warn of heat exhaustion, stroke, skin conditions, and respiratory issues.

Pune's traffic police are facing increasingly harsh summer conditions, with temperatures nearing 40 degrees Celsius. Approximately 1,800 traffic personnel typically work 12-hour shifts, with about 10 hours spent outdoors managing traffic flow.
The midday break offers limited respite, as many personnel cannot travel home to rest. "Some shade structures or traffic booths at road junctions would help, but the heat radiates from everywhere," noted one officer.
Female traffic personnel report additional difficulties, including limited access to shade, water, and restrooms. To manage, some restrict their water intake, risking dehydration. Concerns are also rising about long-term health impacts from constant exposure to heat and pollution.
Doctors confirm that prolonged sun exposure can lead to heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and various skin conditions. Respiratory issues may also worsen. The department has provided caps and is arranging UV-protective sunglasses, with some rest booths available at junctions.
