21 Oct
Summary
- A nine-year-old girl died from suspected dengue in Pune on Sunday.
- She developed dengue shock syndrome and a rare inflammatory complication.
- The city has reported over 2,160 suspected dengue cases this year.
Pune has recorded its first suspected dengue death of the year. A nine-year-old girl from Khese Park in Lohegaon passed away on Sunday, October 18, at Ruby Hall Clinic. She was a class 4 student and her death is under review by the civic health audit committee due to a positive, though non-ELISA NS1 antigen, dengue test.
Initially developing a fever after playing dandiya, she was treated as an outpatient before being admitted to Ruby Hall Clinic on October 17. She was diagnosed with dengue shock syndrome and dengue-associated Haemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a severe inflammatory complication, and had a history of asthma. Her condition was critical, marked by a severe drop in platelet count and compromised liver and kidney functions.
Assistant health chief of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Dr. Rajesh Dighe, stated that such rapid deterioration is unusual for dengue and requires investigation into potential underlying health conditions or treatment delays. The PMC has initiated vector-control activities in the affected area.
This year, Pune has reported 2,160 suspected dengue cases and 97 confirmed by the National Institute of Virology (NIV). In October alone, 497 suspected cases, including 32 confirmed, were recorded. The city has also identified 35 confirmed chikungunya cases and 42 malaria cases.
