Summary
- Pune now uses QR codes for citizens to report disease outbreaks.
- Pamphlets with QR codes will be distributed citywide soon.
- Community reports will be verified by health teams for action.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched an innovative QR-code-based system to enhance early detection of infectious disease outbreaks. Approved on January 30, this initiative empowers citizens to report suspected illness cases or potential outbreaks in their neighborhoods. Pamphlets featuring the QR code will be distributed throughout the city in the coming week, making reporting accessible.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant for unusual clusters of symptoms like fever, cough, or jaundice. By scanning the provided QR code, citizens can directly inform the PMC health department, assisting them in prompt action. Dr. Vaishali Jadhav, assistant health chief, emphasized that community members are often the first to notice such changes, making their early reports vital.
The information submitted via the QR code tool goes directly to the Metropolitan Surveillance Unit (MSU) and is linked to the national IHIP-IDSP. PMC health officials assure a simple, citizen-friendly process. Submitted details, including optional photos, allow for follow-up communication. Dr. Nina Borade, health chief, stated that this community reporting strengthens the city's surveillance system, enabling swift verification and preventive action on the ground.
