Summary
- Hospitals not performing transplants must register with NTORC.
- The hub-and-spoke model aims to improve donor identification.
- Maharashtra seeks to increase deceased organ donation rates.

Government and private hospitals in Pune, empanelled under the MJPAY scheme, are now mandated to register with the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation Registry Centre (NTORC) if they do not conduct organ transplants. This directive was issued by Public Health Minister Prakash Abitkar during a recent workshop in Pune focused on a new hub-and-spoke model.
The initiative seeks to improve the timely identification and referral of potential brain-dead donors. Health officials believe this will expedite the organ transplant process for patients awaiting life-saving organs.
The workshop, co-organized by the Deputy Director of Health Services and ZTCC Pune, saw participation from healthcare professionals across seven districts. Dr. Sachin Jadhav highlighted the need to increase deceased organ donation, stating that even non-transplant hospitals can contribute significantly by identifying donors.
Dr. Bhagwan Pawar emphasized that the hub-and-spoke model will foster better coordination, ensuring no potential donors are missed. The integrated network aims to boost organ donation rates through improved referrals and counseling.
