Summary
- Two health officials in Pune were suspended for neglecting duties.
- Lapses were found in sensitive child health and family planning programs.
- An inquiry has been ordered into the officials' dereliction of duty.
An inquiry has been initiated by the Maharashtra public health department after a high-level review revealed significant deficiencies in the oversight of crucial child health and family planning initiatives. Two assistant directors of health services (family welfare) in Pune have been suspended due to their failure to perform their duties adequately.
The review, conducted on October 12, highlighted that the suspended officials neglected essential tasks, including field visits. Their performance was deemed "extremely unsatisfactory," leading to the order for an inquiry into dereliction of duty. The department plans to appoint interim heads for these programs.
During their suspension, the officers are restricted to the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar general hospital and cannot leave without permission. They are also prohibited from engaging in private employment or business. These measures underscore the department's commitment to robust monitoring of programs vital for maternal and child well-being.
