Dengue Overwhelms Pune Hospitals: Beds Scarce
20 Oct
Summary
- Pune hospitals are overwhelmed with dengue patients, delaying surgeries.
- October dengue cases surge, exceeding previous months significantly.
- Typhoid also contributes to bed scarcity alongside dengue.
Pune hospitals are grappling with an intense dengue outbreak, resulting in heavily occupied general wards, private rooms, and emergency departments. The prolonged recovery period for many patients has led to the postponement of planned surgeries and a prioritization of admissions. From January to mid-October 2026, the city recorded over 2,000 suspected dengue cases, alongside 97 confirmed cases and 35 chikungunya cases.
Dengue and typhoid infections are the primary drivers behind the current bed scarcity. Experts note a substantial increase in dengue cases compared to recent months and the previous October. Many hospitals are experiencing one-to-two-day waiting periods due to the high number of patients requiring hospitalization. High-risk cases exhibiting warning signs, declining platelet counts, or complications are prioritized for admission, while less severe patients are advised home care.
Complicated dengue infections, particularly in patients with comorbidities or those experiencing a second infection, require extended hospital stays. Typical recovery takes three to four days, but complications can extend this to seven to eight days, with discharges only occurring once platelet counts normalize. This continuous inflow of patients and slow discharge rates are significantly pressuring emergency rooms and delaying routine elective procedures.
