Summary
- Pune reports 35 chikungunya and 2,009 suspected dengue cases this year.
- Mosquito breeding sites found in homes and offices fuel disease spread.
- Dengue is now a year-round threat due to climate and urban factors.
Pune has recorded 35 chikungunya cases and 2,009 suspected dengue cases this year, with a notable surge in cases during August, September, and October. The Pune Municipal Corporation's health department has also identified 2,651 mosquito breeding sites in various locations across the city.
The civic body attributes the spread of vector-borne diseases to water storage practices in homes and at construction sites, which create ideal conditions for mosquito breeding. Dengue, once primarily a post-monsoon concern, is now considered a year-round urban health issue.
This shift is driven by factors including the Aedes aegypti mosquito's preference for indoor clean water sources and accelerated mosquito life cycles due to rising global temperatures. Unseasonal weather patterns further contribute to the continuous circulation of the virus, leading to dengue cases being reported even in the early months of the year.
Dengue symptoms, appearing 4-10 days after a mosquito bite, include high fever, severe headaches, and joint pain. While many cases are mild, severe dengue can lead to life-threatening complications like internal bleeding and organ impairment, necessitating prompt medical attention and potential hospitalization.
