Puducherry on Alert: Bird Flu Threat Looms
10 Feb
Summary
- Migratory birds may carry avian influenza virus without showing symptoms.
- Department intensifies surveillance in wetlands and poultry farms.
- Poultry meat and eggs remain safe for consumption; no cause for panic.

In response to the ongoing migratory bird season, Puducherry's Department of Animal Husbandry has issued a critical advisory concerning avian influenza. Migratory waterfowl, frequent visitors to local wetlands, can potentially carry the virus asymptomatically, posing a transmission risk to domestic poultry populations.
The department has significantly intensified surveillance efforts across all local wetlands, poultry farms, and live bird markets. Veterinary teams are actively engaged in public awareness campaigns, providing farmers with crucial guidance on implementing stringent biosecurity protocols. These measures include preventing direct contact between wild and domestic avian species and restricting access to farms.
Rapid response teams are on standby, prepared to manage any suspected cases according to national guidelines. The public is advised to refrain from handling sick or deceased birds and to report any unusual mortality to the nearest veterinary authority immediately. Officials have assured the public that properly cooked poultry meat and eggs are safe for consumption and that there is no immediate cause for alarm.
Director of Animal Husbandry, G Latha Mangeshkkar, has directed veterinary officials to conduct thorough inspections of poultry farms, centers, and markets. They are tasked with monitoring birds for flu symptoms, ensuring the scientific disposal of dead birds and waste, and submitting weekly reports to track the situation closely. The department is committed to safeguarding both poultry and public health through vigilant monitoring and preventive actions.
