Magic Mushrooms Halt Chemo Nerve Damage?

Preliminary research indicates that psilocybin, the active compound in magic mushrooms, may prevent debilitating nerve damage caused by chemotherapy. A recent study published in Science demonstrated that mice treated with psilocybin before chemotherapy were protected from nerve damage. This protection persisted through multiple chemotherapy sessions and for eight months in the study.

Scientists at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center led the research, finding that psilocybin, administered orally, did not impact tumor growth or immune response, suggesting its safety for cancer patients. These promising results have led to human clinical trials commencing this month at the cancer center.

Peripheral neuropathy, characterized by pain, tingling, and numbness in extremities, affects a significant portion of chemotherapy patients and currently lacks effective treatments. If successful in humans, this psilocybin-based approach could significantly improve the quality of life for cancer patients and mark a new chapter for psychedelic medicine beyond psychiatric applications.

While psilocybin remains federally illegal, its therapeutic potential is increasingly recognized, with states like Oregon and Colorado already allowing its use in supervised settings. The study also found that related compounds without strong psychedelic effects offered similar nerve-protective benefits.
