Prue Leith Hospitalized: Migraine Mimics Stroke

Dame Prue Leith, the well-known former Great British Bake Off judge, recently experienced a health scare that led to a hospital visit. While holidaying in Yorkshire, she suffered a severe migraine attack that caused unusual speech difficulties. Her husband, John Playfair, became concerned due to her inability to articulate words clearly, which prompted him to contact their doctor.

The doctor, suspecting a possible stroke due to the speech symptom and Dame Prue's age, arranged for an ambulance. She was taken to Harrogate Hospital for evaluation. Dame Prue, who has a history of migraines since childhood, recognized her symptoms but acknowledged the medical team's caution.

After spending ten hours at the hospital, undergoing checks and a CT scan, Dame Prue was eventually discharged. Throughout her experience, she expressed profound admiration for the National Health Service staff, describing them as cheerful, sympathetic, polite, helpful, and professional. She highlighted the exceptional concern and patience shown by the medical team once her turn came.

Dame Prue noted that while she was confident it was a migraine, the classic stroke symptoms necessitated a thorough investigation to rule out serious conditions. Her experience underscored the importance of prioritizing patient safety, leading to the 'safe not sorry' approach taken by the hospital. She concluded by remarking that the nation's devotion to the NHS is understandable.
