Summary
- Young gym-goers are developing kidney damage from unsupervised protein supplement use.
- A 20-year-old student experienced severe swelling, a sign of kidney distress.
- Doctors warn that damage can be irreversible and require lifelong management.

Doctors in New Delhi are increasingly concerned about young adults experiencing kidney damage from unsupervised consumption of protein supplements. This trend has become particularly worrying as many affected individuals are otherwise healthy people who start taking high doses of protein powders without medical supervision, often on the advice of trainers.
Recent cases, like that of a 20-year-old college student who developed severe swelling and significant protein leakage, underscore the severity of the issue. While the student had no prior health issues, diagnostic tests revealed substantial kidney damage linked to six to eight months of protein supplement use. Although he ceased intake later, the damage to his renal system may be permanent.
Medical experts caution that while some cases can be managed with treatment and lifestyle changes, others may lead to irreversible conditions. PSRI Hospital treats an average of five to seven such patients monthly. Dr. Ravi Bansal advises against exceeding 1.2 gm/kg of body weight in protein intake without clinical indication and stresses verifying supplement purity due to potential toxicities. Natural dietary proteins are considered superior due to their balanced amino acid profile and bioavailability.
