Post-GLP-1 Weight Loss: Structured Support Prevents Regain
7 Oct
Summary
- Structured support aids weight maintenance after GLP-1 cessation.
- Medically tailored meals and apps significantly reduced weight regain.
- Usual care led to substantial weight rebound post-GLP-1 treatment.
A pilot study published today in Obesity Science & Practice investigated methods to combat weight regain following the cessation of GLP-1 medications. The trial tracked 39 adults who had achieved weight loss on these drugs but were stopping treatment.
Participants were assigned to one of three groups: usual care, the Noom behavioral app, or a medically tailored meal delivery service. Over four months, weight changes were monitored using Bluetooth scales.
The results indicated that the group receiving usual care regained approximately 10.75% of their body weight. In contrast, participants using the Noom app regained only 3.6%, and those with medically tailored meals regained 3.58%.
These findings suggest that structured support systems can be effective in mitigating early weight regain after GLP-1 therapy. Researchers emphasize the need for larger, longer studies to confirm these initial positive outcomes.
