Doctors at Nagpur's Government Medical College and Hospital's NICU have successfully saved an extremely premature infant. Born at only 26 weeks gestation and weighing a mere 700 grams, the baby required nearly 100 days of constant, complex care.
The newborn faced immediate respiratory distress syndrome, necessitating emergency surfactant therapy and ventilator support. Further challenges included septicaemia, requiring a prolonged course of antibiotics, and Necrotising Enterocolitis, a severe intestinal condition. Doctors also addressed Retinopathy of Prematurity and congenital heart complications.
Through vigilant monitoring and coordinated treatment, including Anti-VEGF therapy and cautious orogastric feeding, the medical team stabilized the infant. The baby was eventually discharged at 1.88kg, a testament to the dedication of the paediatric department's doctors and nursing staff.
