Premature Baby's NICU Triumph: Covered by Government Scheme

A newborn baby, born prematurely at 33 weeks weighing 1.926 kg, required immediate intensive care due to respiratory distress. The infant was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for 17 days, receiving treatments such as CPAP, oxygen support, and phototherapy for neonatal jaundice. Doctors emphasized the importance of gradual progress and consistent monitoring in NICU cases. Kangaroo Mother Care was also utilized to aid feeding and temperature regulation. The baby's condition stabilized, and her weight increased to 2.106 kg before discharge, with a requirement for ongoing monitoring. This comprehensive neonatal care was provided at no direct cost to the family, as it was covered under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana. This initiative offers cashless healthcare services, including critical care, to eligible families through empanelled hospitals, aiming to expand healthcare access and reduce out-of-pocket expenses in Punjab. The timely admission and intervention were noted as significant factors in the infant's successful recovery.
