Disciplinary action has been initiated against four health personnel in Telangana following the death of a pregnant woman from the Bhadradri Kothagudem district. The woman, Kunja Vanaja, died from severe postpartum haemorrhage and cardiac arrest after delivering a stillborn baby.
Vanaja was receiving antenatal care at the Gundala Primary Health Centre (PHC). She arrived at the PHC in critical condition on June 13 and delivered a stillborn child. Despite initial treatment, her condition worsened, necessitating referrals to higher facilities.
A preliminary inquiry on June 17 revealed significant shortcomings in the information system, case management, and referral processes. Consequently, ASHA worker Mokalla Lakshmi and ANM P. Dhanamma face action for failing to identify severe anemia and ensure timely referral.
ANM E. Gnaneswari, on duty during Vanaja's arrival, is also under scrutiny for conducting the delivery without consulting the Medical Officer and for not arranging for health personnel to accompany the patient during her transfer. Dr. Sudeep, the Medical Officer of Gundala PHC, has been suspended pending a detailed inquiry due to his absence during the critical period.
