Pregnant Mum Dies From Seizure Amid Care Concerns
24 Apr
Summary
- Pregnant woman died from seizure due to uncontrolled epilepsy.
- Concerns raised over medical advice regarding pregnancy and medication.
- Family unaware of specific risks like Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy.

Megan Gardiner, 25, tragically died in June 2022 from Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) while 17 weeks pregnant. Her mother found her unresponsive in her bedroom in Barry, South Wales. An inquest has heard concerns that Megan, who had suffered from epilepsy since age 13, had one of the most volatile forms of the condition, which was not adequately controlled by her medication.
Specialists indicated there were significant failures in Megan's care, particularly regarding advice on her epilepsy medication during pregnancy. The inquest is investigating whether she and her family were properly informed about the risks, including SUDEP and sleep seizures. Her mother stated these risks were never directly communicated. Megan had been advised to reduce certain medication, a decision questioned by experts.
Gardiner was described as ambitious with a passion for make-up. Despite discussions about terminating her pregnancy due to health risks, she reportedly never considered it. The inquest also noted her decision not to take sodium valproate, a medication recommended by doctors but known to be dangerous for babies, though it might have been a temporary solution for her seizures.
