Pre-Workout Supplements Linked to Poor Sleep in Youth
5 Mar
Summary
- Nearly 900 participants in a study linked pre-workout use to sleep deprivation.
- Pre-workout users are twice as likely to sleep five hours or less.
- High caffeine content in supplements disrupts crucial adolescent sleep patterns.

A recent study has identified a concerning link between the use of pre-workout dietary supplements and inadequate sleep among young individuals. The research, which analyzed responses from approximately 900 participants, revealed that individuals using these supplements were more than twice as likely to experience sleep durations of five hours or less. This is significantly below the approximately eight hours recommended for this age group.
Pre-workout supplements often contain high levels of caffeine, with doses ranging from 90 to over 350mg, which can substantially disrupt sleep patterns. Researchers emphasize that this stimulant-rich content may be contributing to poor sleep and poses risks to the overall well-being and development of young people. Health professionals are urged to inquire about supplement use during patient visits.
