Illegal Stimulant DMAA Found in Popular Pre-Workout

Leader Formulas, LLC, a Texas-based company, has initiated a recall of its RAPTURE Preworkout powder after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) detected the presence of 1,3-Dimethylamylamine (DMAA). This synthetic stimulant, also known as DMAA, is illegal for use in dietary supplements and poses significant health risks.

The FDA warns that DMAA can dangerously elevate blood pressure, potentially leading to heart attacks, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. While there have been no reported health issues linked to this specific recall, DMAA has been previously associated with fatalities, including those of Texas service members in 2012-2013 and a London marathon runner in 2013.

The recalled batch of RAPTURE Preworkout, available in flavors like Rainbow Twist, Electric Lemonade, and Berry Mojito, was sold between January 29, 2025, and May 25, 2026. Each container is 450g and bears the lot number 260327-4. Leader Formulas is contacting distributors and customers to arrange for product returns and full refunds.

DMAA was once used as a nasal decongestant but was removed from the market in the 1980s due to adverse side effects. Its resurfaced marketing for fitness and weight loss since 2006 has been met with regulatory action. The FDA clarified that DMAA is not a naturally occurring ingredient and its presence in supplements makes the products illegal. DMAA was banned in the UK, Canada, and Australia in 2012 and declared illegal in the U.S. in April 2013.
