PPIs Warning: Doctor's Alert on Long-Term Use Risks
7 Feb
Summary
- Long-term PPI use may increase risks of low magnesium and vitamin B12.
- Proton pump inhibitors can increase the risk of gut infections like C. diff.
- Regular GP reviews are crucial for those on extended PPI treatment.

Dr. Punam Krishan, an NHS GP and BBC Morning Live resident doctor, has issued a caution regarding the extended use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), commonly prescribed for ailments like heartburn and acid reflux. These medications, including omeprazole and lansoprazole, are highly effective at reducing stomach acid production.
However, Dr. Krishan emphasizes that PPIs are not intended for indefinite use and necessitate regular medical reviews. Prolonged usage can elevate the risk of developing low magnesium and vitamin B12 levels. Furthermore, these drugs can disrupt the natural balance of gut bacteria, increasing susceptibility to infections such as Clostridioides difficile (C. diff).
Individuals experiencing persistent symptoms like diarrhea or changes in bowel habits, particularly while on PPIs, should consult their doctor immediately. Routine monitoring, typically every six to 12 months for those on omeprazole for over a year, is recommended to mitigate potential adverse effects. Lifestyle adjustments, such as eating smaller meals, avoiding lying down after eating, and wearing looser clothing, can also aid in managing acid reflux symptoms effectively.
