Pope Leo XIV is recovering well after undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous nodule from his right lung. Doctors confirmed the presence of adenocarcinoma, a common type of lung cancer, and reported good recovery of the operated lower right lobe.
The 71-year-old Pontiff is working from the hospital and resumed his daily activities. He celebrated Mass with priests and met with his chief of staff, Archbishop Paolo Rudelli, who handles much of the Holy See's daily administrative work.
His personal doctor and the head of thoracic surgery stated that the Pope's physiotherapy involves full mobility exercises. He is expected to remain hospitalized until at least October 20. Doctors await further test results to assess the cancer's molecular makeup and determine if additional treatment is needed.
Despite the surgery, Pope Leo XIV indicated no changes to his planned pastoral visit to South America from November 6-17, which includes stops in Peru, Uruguay, and Argentina. He previously expressed gratitude for prayers for this upcoming trip.
