While at the hospital, Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass on two consecutive days, October 15th and 16th, with medical staff and members of the Gendarmerie Corps in attendance. On October 16th, he also held a telephone conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
During their call, Pope Leo XIV expressed deep concern over the humanitarian situation in Oleshky, located in the Kherson region. He urged for a ceasefire to allow for the delivery of essential aid and the safe evacuation of civilians from the conflict zone.
Despite concerns raised by some cardinals regarding his health, the Vatican has stated that plans for Pope Leo XIV's upcoming visit to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru from November 6th to 17th are proceeding as scheduled. This trip is noted as one of the most intense papal visits arranged in recent decades.
