Pope Leo XIV Declared Cancer-Free After Surgery
22 Oct
Summary
- Pope Leo XIV has concluded cancer treatment after successful surgery.
- Tests confirm localized lung adenocarcinoma, with no signs of spread.
- Lower lobe of the Pope's right lung was surgically removed.

Pope Leo XIV has successfully concluded his cancer treatment following surgery to remove a tumor. The Vatican announced on Wednesday that post-operative tests confirmed the cancer was a localized lung adenocarcinoma and had not spread beyond the initial site.
Surgeons removed the lower lobe of the Pope's right lung during the procedure. According to his personal physician, Dr. Luigi Carbone, and surgeon Dr. Stefano Margaritora, final histological and molecular biology examinations validated the diagnosis. Their joint statement indicated that a subsequent oncological evaluation determined no further treatment is necessary for the Pontiff.
While surgery alone can be sufficient for early-stage cancers, further tests will monitor for any signs of recurrence or aggressive behavior. The successful outcome suggests the tumor was caught and addressed at an opportune moment.
