Pollution Chokes Lungs: Children Most at Risk
20 Jul
Summary
- Air pollution severely impacts lung health, causing airway inflammation and infection.
- Children are most vulnerable due to developing lungs, facing increased respiratory issues.
- Experts emphasize collective responsibility for clean air to protect future lung health.

Air pollution is increasingly damaging lung health, leading to airway inflammation and a higher risk of respiratory infections. Doctors are particularly concerned about children, whose developing lungs are most vulnerable to the escalating pollution levels. This critical issue was a focus at a recent meet organized by The Association of Chest Physicians (ACP), West Bengal.
Physicians report a notable increase in children experiencing persistent coughs, wheezing, shortness of breath, and frequent colds, attributing these issues largely to rising pollution. Experts warn that without immediate improvements in air quality, this could result in a generation with permanently reduced lung capacity and an increased susceptibility to conditions like COPD.
The ACP West Bengal's fourth Mid-Term Conference, "Pulmonology 2026," featured discussions on various lung health topics, including COPD and tuberculosis. The conference, attended by nearly 250 delegates, underscored the importance of advancing respiratory medicine. Experts emphasized that while medical treatments can manage symptoms, the ultimate solution lies in collective efforts to improve air quality for the well-being of current and future generations.
