Bihar's oldest and one of its largest healthcare institutions, Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH), is establishing the state's first dedicated spine sub-speciality unit. The state cabinet greenlit the creation of 39 new positions for this specialized facility on May 27, 2026. This significant move is designed to tackle the growing incidence of spinal disorders and trauma, particularly those stemming from road accidents.
The forthcoming unit at PMCH will provide advanced treatments, including minimally invasive and endoscopic spine surgeries, correction of spinal deformities like scoliosis, and treatment for spinal tumors and tuberculosis. The sanctioned posts include professors, associate professors, assistant professors, senior residents, staff nurses, and operation theatre assistants, with additional support staff to be hired via outsourcing. The estimated annual cost for these new positions is ₹2.46 crore, to be covered by the state government. This development marks a crucial step in upgrading Bihar's tertiary healthcare capabilities.
