A new £25 million Community Diagnostics Centre (CDC) has opened in Plymouth's city centre, marking a significant step forward in improving local healthcare services. Located on Colin Campbell Court, the facility is designed to enhance patient outcomes by providing quicker access to a comprehensive range of diagnostic tests and specialist appointments.
The CDC boasts the capacity to accommodate up to 340 daily appointments, with an ambitious annual goal of performing 135,000 tests. Services offered include CT, MRI, and X-ray scans, as well as ultrasound, cardiology, lung function, vascular, and neurophysiology appointments. Booked blood tests and audiology services are also available.
The development aims to boost footfall in the West End and support the regeneration of the area, with the city council selling the land to the University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust for a nominal sum. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to integrate health facilities into the urban fabric, supporting future housing plans.
Efforts to establish the diagnostics centre began in 2019, facing challenges along the way, including a previous funding offer being declined. The recruitment of 90 additional staff for the imaging team is expected to further expedite test results for patients. A second CDC and a dental hub are also planned for the region.
