Placer County, California, has reported its first confirmed measles cases of the year, with officials suspecting a link to a significant outbreak in South Carolina. Three teenage siblings from one family have been diagnosed, and a fourth family member is under investigation.
Health authorities in Placer County believe these cases may stem from an extended family member's recent travel to South Carolina, where nearly 1,000 measles cases have been confirmed. The vaccination status of the affected individuals in Placer County remains unconfirmed.
Officials have stated that all patients are recovering at home and pose no public exposure risk. Dr. Rob Oldham, Placer County Health Officer, noted that the outbreak appears contained within an extended family, suggesting a low risk to the wider community. As of February 23, California had recorded 21 measles cases, while the U.S. had seen 1,136 cases in 2026.
