Calcified Plaque Fractured: First IVL Success at PIMS
4 Jul
Summary
- PIMS doctors used advanced imaging and IVL for the first time.
- A 74-year-old patient had severe calcified plaque deposits.
- The minimally invasive technique fractured plaque, restoring blood flow.

The Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has reported a significant medical first, utilizing advanced imaging-guided intravascular ultrasound alongside Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) for the initial time within the hospital.
This groundbreaking procedure was performed on a 74-year-old patient experiencing severe calcified plaque buildup in their coronary arteries, which had resulted in instant restenosis. The cardiology team, led by A. K. Badrinath and Moorthy, expertly navigated this complex case.
Employing the advanced, minimally invasive IVL technique, the medical team successfully fractured the calcified plaque. This crucial step allowed for smooth stent deployment and effectively restored optimal blood flow to the patient's heart.
The patient has since recovered fully from the procedure and has been discharged from PIMS, marking a successful outcome for this pioneering treatment. This achievement highlights PIMS' commitment to adopting cutting-edge medical technologies.
