Phone Addiction Linked to Low Body Awareness
1 Nov
Summary
- Smartphone users easily distracted have low bodily awareness.
- They also exhibit high physiological reactivity to stimuli.
- This creates a cycle of stress and disconnection from needs.

A recent study from Hokkaido University in Japan has identified two significant psychological traits among individuals who exhibit high distraction by their smartphones. Researchers found that people who frequently check their phones, even when on silent, often lack interoceptive awareness. This means they struggle to recognize and understand their body's internal signals, from hunger and thirst to emotions and pain.
Further findings indicate these easily distracted individuals are also more physiologically reactive. Their bodies tend to respond more intensely to stimuli, such as showing accelerated heart rates when exposed to phone-related cues. This combination of low bodily awareness and heightened reactivity can create a feedback loop, exacerbating stress and leading to a disconnection from essential physical and emotional needs.
