24 Feb
Summary
- A twisted intestine was not flagged in a radiologist's report.
- The philanthropist died a week after emergency surgery.
- The radiologist now reports all such findings, regretting past practice.

Dame Julie Kenny, a 67-year-old businesswoman and philanthropist, died in February 2026 following complications from a twisted intestine. An inquest at Doncaster Coroner's Court revealed that initial scans performed on February 8, 2026, indicated the beginning of a twisted intestine. However, this finding was not highlighted in the report from Everlight Radiology, an outsourced provider.
Dr. Vishy Acharya, the radiologist who reviewed the scan remotely, admitted he saw "swirling of the mesentery" but did not report it, as he had previously been instructed not to flag it unless other issues were present. He has since changed his practice and now reports all such findings, regretting that he did not do so earlier. Dame Julie, who had a prior gastric bypass, underwent emergency surgery on February 15, 2026, after a further scan showed "features of significant clinical concern." She passed away a week later.
Consultant radiologist Dr. Sadashiv Kamath later reviewed the initial scan and observed not only swirling but also vascular occlusion, indicating a blocked vein and early organ death. Dame Julie was known for her significant contributions to charity SAVE Britain's Heritage, overseeing the restoration of Wentworth Woodhouse. She held various prestigious appointments, including Deputy Lieutenant of South Yorkshire and Master Cutler of Sheffield. Her son described her as having a "troubled upbringing" but always focused on creating a better life for her children. Dame Julie received her damehood in 2019 for her service to industry and heritage.
