PGIMER Launches Dedicated Cardiac Emergency Care
15 Mar
Summary
- A dedicated cardiac emergency facility launched at PGIMER.
- New service aims to improve response for time-sensitive cardiac cases.
- System ensures prompt triaging and specialized cardiac care.

The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh has established a dedicated Cardiac Emergency facility, which became operational on March 1. This move addresses a critical gap in care identified since the Advanced Cardiac Centre's inception in 2009.
The institute's director highlighted the challenges of managing acute cardiac cases within the main emergency department, which handles a vast number of trauma, medical, and surgical emergencies. A focused pathway for cardiac emergencies is crucial for time-sensitive patients.
The new integrated framework is designed to reduce response times and improve accountability. It aims to decongest the main emergency wing, enhance patient flow, and reduce stress for patients and their families.
An official communication clarified that patients reporting to Nehru Hospital Emergency will be initially assessed by a Senior Resident Cardiology. Only after their consultation will patients be transferred to the Advanced Cardiac Centre's Heart Command or CCU.
PGIMER emphasized that this dedicated Cardiac Emergency is an additional service, not a replacement. Cardiology services will remain available at the Main Emergency, ensuring patients are triaged appropriately for specialized cardiac care or transferred to the Main Emergency if non-cardiac issues are identified.
