PGI Neuroscience Centre: Inpatient Services Delayed by Staff Shortage
28 Oct
Summary
- Inpatient services delayed due to nursing staff shortage at a new Rs 300 crore facility.
- New nurses are expected to join in January, allowing phased inpatient services.
- A neurology day-care service will launch before Diwali to bridge the gap.
The Advanced Neuroscience Centre at PGI, a state-of-the-art Rs 300 crore facility, has been operational with outpatient services since April but is yet to admit its first inpatient. The primary obstacle to making the centre fully functional is a significant shortage of nursing staff.
Preparations are underway to commence inpatient services in phases, with the initial beds anticipated to be ready after new nurses join in January. These new recruits are crucial for the centre's operational readiness, which also includes dry runs for essential services like patient diets and laundry.
To mitigate the delay, PGI plans to introduce a five-to-10-bed neurology day-care service following Diwali. This interim measure will cater to patients needing short-stay procedures and help streamline critical workflows. The recruitment of 230 staff nurses is in progress, with the entrance examination scheduled for November 18.
Once the new nursing staff joins in January, PGI intends to open inpatient services progressively, starting with 25 neurosurgery and 25 neurology beds. The centre aims to reach its full capacity, comprising 300 general ward beds, 30 private ward beds, and 61 specialised ICU beds, by March 31.
