Life expectancy in Peterborough is falling below averages for the East of England and England as a whole. Recent data indicates men in the city can expect to live 77.8 years, and women 81.9 years. These figures were presented as part of the annual public health report to the Peterborough City Council's Prevention, Independence and Resilience Scrutiny Committee.
The report highlights concerns regarding healthy life expectancy, which currently stands at 55.6 years for men and 55.2 years for women. This represents a significant decrease of five to six years compared to the average of other local authorities and has been in sharp decline since 2014.
To combat this trend, a campaign named 'Peterborough Get Moving' has been launched to increase health and fitness participation across the city. Regular physical activity is emphasized as crucial for reducing the risk of six common preventable conditions, including cancers and cardiovascular disease.
Authorities are optimistic that ongoing investments in new swimming pools and sports facilities will provide increased opportunities for residents to become more active. The initiative aims to foster a city where everyone can lead healthier and more active lives.
