Pesticide Poisoning Crisis: 11,000 Deaths Annually

A significant global health crisis has been exposed, with a new study indicating that an estimated 402 to 433 million farmers and farm workers experience unintentional acute pesticide poisoning annually. This equates to nearly half of the world's farming population.

The findings, based on data from 2006-2023, also highlight a tragic death toll, with approximately 11,000 fatalities occurring each year due to pesticide exposure. India is disproportionately affected, accounting for nearly 60% of these deaths, underscoring a severe public health challenge within the country.

Researchers are calling for urgent implementation of UN recommendations to phase out highly hazardous pesticides. Despite growing awareness, global pesticide use has steadily increased, reaching 3.8 million tonnes in 2023, a doubling since 1990.

While the study focused on acute poisoning, concerns are rising about long-term health impacts, including potential links to Parkinson's disease, which is increasingly recognized as an occupational disease for farmers in countries like France, Germany, and Italy. The study also noted inadequate data collection, emphasizing the need for standardized reporting protocols.
