Summary
- Workout timing aligned with personal chronotype can reduce heart disease risk.
- Study shows matching exercise to body clock improves fitness and sleep.
- Personalized exercise timing could enhance cardiometabolic prevention strategies.

New research indicates that synchronizing exercise routines with an individual's inherent chronotype may substantially reduce cardiovascular risk factors. Experts suggest that identifying whether someone is an "early bird" or a "night owl" could be particularly beneficial for those already managing conditions like high blood pressure. The study evaluated participants aged 40-60, all with at least one heart risk factor, by monitoring their core body temperature and using questionnaires. Participants were randomly assigned to exercise groups where their workout schedule either matched their chronotype or did not.
Over a 12-week period, key health indicators such as blood pressure and fasting glucose levels were monitored. While both groups experienced improvements in heart risk factors, aerobic fitness, and sleep quality, those whose exercise times matched their chronotype saw greater reductions in blood pressure and enhanced heart rate and sleep quality. The benefits were notably more pronounced in sleep quality and blood pressure, especially among morning larks. Researchers advocate for chronotype assessment in exercise prescriptions to improve engagement and health outcomes.
