An entrepreneur in Guelph, Ontario, has developed a functional chocolate bar called Code Red, offering a natural approach to managing period pain. Jessica Ulbikas, founder of BioSnactive Foods, created the chocolate bar as a delicious way to supplement essential nutrients. The formula includes magnesium, calcium, and vitamin D, which are often deficient in individuals experiencing menstrual discomfort. Registered dietitian Emily Arthur notes that magnesium may help relax the uterine muscle, while calcium and vitamin D have also been linked to reducing cramp intensity. Each serving of Code Red provides 150 milligrams of magnesium, 300 milligrams of calcium, and 38 micrograms of vitamin D. Ulbikas formulated the amounts to complement, rather than overwhelm, a person's existing nutrient intake. The chocolate is manufactured locally at Esta Chocolates in Kitchener and is currently sold at select Guelph locations, with plans to expand to Goodness Me! stores across Canada and the University of Guelph bookstore. Ulbikas also has future plans for milk chocolate versions and other functional food products. Arthur advises that while nutrition is key, other factors like physical activity, sleep, and hydration also play significant roles in easing period pain.
