- NHS scheme provided support for vulnerable homeowners.

A pensioner from South Shields, Lynda Graves, lived for over a year without hot water and central heating because she could not afford a new boiler, which would cost nearly £3,000. The prolonged exposure to cold air exacerbated her health, leading to asthma symptoms and feelings of depression.
Her living situation became so severe that her 101-year-old mother could no longer visit safely. Previous attempts to find help through boiler schemes were unsuccessful. Fortunately, a new NHS Healthy Homes initiative, which supports individuals with cold homes, damp conditions, and social isolation, has provided a vital lifeline.
This social prescribing project, funded by the NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board, helped Graves secure a grant as a vulnerable homeowner for a new boiler. The scheme aims to identify and address risks in deprived areas early, thereby reducing health problems and lessening the burden on hospital admissions.
