Pennsylvania health officials reported on Wednesday the death of an unvaccinated resident of Lancaster County who tested positive for measles. This marks the fifth measles-associated death in the state since August.
Earlier reports indicated two infant deaths from measles in Lancaster County. Additionally, an 18-year-old in Mifflin County and a 40-year-old woman in Jefferson County died from measles-associated causes in mid-September.
Since the current outbreak began, Pennsylvania has recorded 943 confirmed measles cases spread across 39 counties, with 176 individuals hospitalized. At least six babies were born with congenital measles in the state.
The Centers for Disease Control has officially recognized two measles-associated deaths nationwide this year, though specific states and dates remain unidentified. Nationally, there have been 3,569 confirmed measles infections.
