Measles Claims Third Life in Pennsylvania This Year

A 40-year-old woman in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, has died from complications associated with measles. This death, confirmed on Saturday, marks the third measles-related fatality recorded in the state this year. The coroner described the death as 'measles-related,' emphasizing the virus's potential to be life-threatening.

Pennsylvania had previously reported two measles-related infant deaths in August. One infant's death was directly attributed to measles, while the other involved a premature infant with a genetic condition. Neither infant was old enough to have received the measles vaccine, which is typically administered around one year of age.

As of Friday, the state has documented 676 cases of measles across 37 counties. Of these cases, 124 individuals required hospitalization. Notably, the figures for measles-related deaths reported by state and local officials differ from those reported by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which indicated no such deaths for the year on Sunday.
